Together with his brother Johann Reinhard (* 1628, † 1666) Johann Philipp was sent on a cavalier tour through Germany, the Netherlands , England , France and Switzerland . As a descendant of the Hanau family , he was assigned the office and Babenhausen Castle as his residence in his father's will . It did not come into their possession until 1647, after the Electorate of Mainz , which had occupied Babenhausen for years due to the war, vacated the castle, town and office of Babenhausen.
On February 16, 1651 he married Princess Susanna Margarethe von Anhalt-Dessau (* 1610; † 1663). She was a daughter of Prince Johann Georg I of Anhalt-Dessau (* 1567; † 1618) and the Countess Palatine Dorothea of Pfalz-Simmern (* 1581; † 1631). So she was a sister of Princess Sibylle Christine von Anhalt-Dessau (* 1603, † 1686), who was married in second marriage to the brother of Johann Philipp, the ruling Count Friedrich Casimir . The marriage of Johann Philipp and Susanne Margaretha remained childless. Johann Philipp fathered children, albeit out of wedlock. Three are proven:
- NN, a daughter (* after 1663), married to a customs administrator " Cressl ".
- NN, a son (* after 1663) who had the surname " Berg " and who later got a job as an officer in the Hanau militia .
- NN, a second son (* after 1663), who also had the surname " Berg ", and who later also got a job as an officer in the Hanau militia.
Nothing is known about the mother or mothers of these children.
In 1664 Johann Philipp visited the Reichstag in Regensburg , where he got into a duel with a Prince of Reuss . In 1669 he tried a coup d'état against his brother Friedrich Casimir , who had heavily indebted the County of Hanau and was now trying to rehabilitate himself by selling territory. The agnates therefore intervened against Friedrich Casimir and seized the government in his absence in November 1669. This emergency regime collapsed after three days and Friedrich Casimir locked his brother out of the city of Hanau in return.
Johann Philipp died shortly afterwards on December 18, 1669 and, like his wife before, was buried in the town church in Babenhausen.
