Count Johann Eduard Trofimowitsch von Baranoff ( Russian Эдуард Трофимович Баранов ; born December 18, 1811 in Saint Petersburg , † August 3, 1884 in Baden-Baden ) was a Russian infantry general in the Imperial Russian Army and a member of the Russian State Council . In 1846 he was accepted into the Russian count class.

Life

Johann Eduard left the Imperial Lyceum without a final exam and was accepted into the Guard as an ensign in 1832 . In 1838 Tsar Nicholas I (1796–1855) appointed him to his wing adjutant and in 1849 appointed him major general à la suite . In 1846 he and his brothers were elevated to the rank of Russian count. In 1851 he was chief of staff of the First Infantry - Corps . From 1852 to 1855 he was in command of the Preobrazhensk body guard regiment . 1855 With the beginning of the reign of Tsar Alexander II (1818–1881) he was appointed adjutant general to his majesty in 1855 . From 1855 to 1863 he was Chief of Staff in the Guard Corps, he was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1857 and was a personal advisor to Tsar Alexander II. From April to October 1866 he was Governor General of the Baltic Governments, which included Estonia , Livonia and Courland , and was also Commander-in-Chief of the regional military districts. From October 1866 to 1868 he was commander-in-chief of the military districts of Vilnius and governor-general of the north-western regions, including Vilnius, Kovno and Grodno . In 1868 he was appointed to the Russian State Council and a year later he was appointed General of the Infantry. In 1876 he was chairman of the commission for research into the railway industry . From 1881 to 1884 he was President of the Economics Department (comparable to the Economics Department) of the Reichsrat. For the coronation of Tsar Alexander III. (1845–1894) on May 15, 1883, he was given the honor of carrying the imperial scepter .

Johann Eduard came from the Baltic noble family von Baranoff , who came from a Russian boyar family , had settled in Estonia and Livonia in the middle of the 16th century and was in Swedish service. His father was the Russian Chamberlain and Real Councilor of State Trofim Johann Ludwig von Baranoff (* 1779 in Reval ; † December 27, 1828 in Saint Petersburg), who was married to Julie von Adlersberg (1789–1864). His brothers were the Infantry General Nikolai Graf von Baranoff (1808-1883) and the Russian Governor General of Tver Paul Graf von Baranoff (1814-1864). Johann Eduard was unmarried.
