The Johannes Nepomuk Chapel at Am Tabor in the 2nd district of Vienna , Leopoldstadt , was built as a line chapel. The chapel is owned by the City of Vienna and is a listed building. Today it is located on the northern side of Taborstrasse in front of house No. 89 near the square-like widening of the street at the intersection of Nordwestbahnstrasse / Scherzergasse / Am Tabor. (Immediately to the left of the chapel, the border to the newly formed 20th district has been running since 1900.)

history

In the course of the construction of the line wall around the suburbs of Vienna , so-called line chapels, which were consecrated to the bridges over the moat because of St. John Nepomuk , were built at the gates .

The Johannes Nepomuk Chapel “Am Tabor” was built in 1728.

The small rectangular building has a bell roof. The main facade has a basket arch opening with a pilaster frame and a relief decoration consisting of garlands and shells with putti heads .

In the chapel there is a stone statue of the saint with putti and cross on a volute pedestal. This bears an inscription with the chronogram 1728. The statue is one of numerous depictions of Johannes Nepomuk in Vienna . It originally stood in the house chapel of the nearby toll building, built around 1730 (Am Tabor 2, Taborstrasse 80) and was transferred here in 1879.

The historical location of the chapel was a few meters further south, roughly on today's south-facing carriageway on Taborstrasse. Tram line 5 ran through Trunnerstrasse before 1963 and turned into Nordwestbahnstrasse behind the former chapel location.

In 1963 the chapel was moved to the north side of the street out of traffic considerations, but remained in the 2nd district. The information that Felix Czeike took up in his Vienna Historical Lexicon in 1994 that the chapel is now in the 20th district is a mistake.
