Johannes Job
Johannes Job (born October 12, 1664 in Frankfurt am Main , † February 5, 1736 in Leipzig ) was a German civil servant , Protestant theologian and hymn poet .
Life
Johannes Job was born on October 12, 1664 in Frankfurt am Main. He attended the University of Strasbourg in 1684 and the University of Leipzig the following year . He studied law , but also attended Spener's theological lectures . Through this he came into contact with pietism . After completing his studies, he was briefly court master in Plauen and settled in Leipzig in 1692 . There he worked in the city administration. 1699 first bank clerk, later chief postal secretary until 1711, when he also edited political newspapers . He had been a councilor since 1711, and in the following year he also became a syndic . For builders finally appointed him in 1732; he held this position until his death on February 5, 1736.
Job left a son, Johann Heinrich Job (partly also Johann Friedrich Job). He was a deacon and rector in Glaucha and lived from November 14, 1699 to February 4, 1762.
Job was also active as a writer; he wrote edification writings and sacred songs. Five of his hymns were printed in the second part of Johann Anastasius Freylinghausen's Geistreiches Gesangbuch . He had a preference for devotional songs , following Spener's theological orientation. Therefore Job is considered the most important Pietist poet outside Halle .
