Johannes Parleberg , also: Johann Parleberg (* around 1420 in Stralsund ; † July 9, 1483 in Greifswald ) was a German legal scholar and Roman Catholic clergyman.

Life

Johannes Parleberg was the son of Stralsund councilor Arnold Parleberg and his first wife Mynteke Liskow. He attended the University of Rostock and was already doing his master's degree when he was enrolled at the newly founded University of Greifswald in 1456 . In 1457 he was appointed canon of the collegiate monastery at St. Nikolai Cathedral.

Parleberg initially belonged to the artist faculty , where he worked as an examiner and dean . At the same time he devoted himself to legal studies. He heard the lectures of Professors Dietrich Sukow and Georg Walter on Roman and canon law . In 1461 he moved to the law faculty as a full professor of Roman law. His doctorate to Doctor legum took place in 1468. Between 1466 and 1482 he was rector of the university five times.

As a recognized legal scholar, the Dukes Erich II and Wartislaw X of Pomerania, together with Matthias Wedel , Georg Walter and Sabel Siegfried, sent him to Vienna to the court of the emperors in order to negotiate the Stettin succession dispute. In October 1469 he traveled to Petrikau with representatives of the Pomeranian estates . There the embassy was supposed to obtain an arbitration award from the Polish king Kasimir IV in favor of Pomerania-Wolgast . In 1472, alongside Georg Walter and Hermann Slupwachter, he was involved in the negotiations in Röreke near Schwedt and in the Prenzlau peace treaty concluded in May with the Electorate of Brandenburg . In the same year he received a canonical in Stettin .

In 1474 he became the successor to the late Heinrich Bukow as a prepositus at Greifswald Cathedral and in 1475 after Georg Walter's death, he was professor of the Faculty of Law. He also became Vice Chancellor and sub-curator of the University of Greifswald as well as Princely Councilor and Syndic of the Camminer Cathedral Chapter . He was repeatedly active as an arbitrator, for example in disputes between the university and the city council but also within the university. Together with the Pomeranian clergy , he protested in 1481/82 against the installation of Marinus de Fregeno as Bishop of Cammin . When Marinus de Fregeno was attacked by an angry crowd in Greifswald, he granted the bishop protection in Greifswald Cathedral, for which he extended the cathedral's privileges out of gratitude.

After his death in 1483, Johannes Parleberg was buried in St. Nikolai Cathedral. His manuscripts came into the possession of the cathedral library through his pupil Johannes Meilof and the cathedral preacher Everhard Grothus.
