Johannes Vogelsang

Johannes ("Hans") Vogelsang (born December 11, 1892 in Ringethal , Rochlitz District Authority ; † January 10, 1987 in Leipzig ) was a German politician ( KPD / SED ) and resistance fighter against National Socialism . He was chairman of the SED district party control commission in Leipzig .

Life

Vogelsang, son of a working-class family, learned cotton spinning and later worked as a textile worker. In 1910 he became a member of the SPD . From 1912 to 1919 he did military service and was a seaman in the Imperial Navy in World War I and a participant in the November Revolution .

In 1919 he was one of the founders of the KPD in Mittweida and was a city councilor there from 1924. In 1929 he became head of the Red Aid of Germany (RHD) in the Erzgebirge - Vogtland district , after the merger of the three Saxon districts he was RHD secretary for the state of Saxony in 1929/1930 . At the beginning of 1931 he went to Moscow and was there representative of the Central Association of the RHD at the International Red Aid .

In May 1933 he returned illegally to Germany. On August 10, 1933, he was arrested by the Gestapo in Berlin and remained in protective custody until May 1934 . In August 1935 he was arrested again and remained in Sachsenburg concentration camp until November 1936 . After the attack on Poland began , he was detained again for ten weeks, this time in Buchenwald . His company, a cotton wool factory in Mittweida, important to the war effort, asked him to do so. After the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 , he was again imprisoned in the concentration camp from July to November 1944. In February 1945 he was drafted into the Volkssturm , but Vogelsang deserted.

From May to September 1945 he was mayor of Mittweida. He then took over the chairmanship of the KPD in the Döbeln district and was first secretary of the SED district leadership from 1946 to 1952. From 1952 to 1962 he acted as chairman of the Leipzig District Party Control Commission of the SED and most recently since 1962 as chairman of the Veterans' Commission of the SED district leadership in Leipzig.

After his death he was buried in a grave of honor in the Leipzig South Cemetery.

Awards and honors

  • In 1969 Werner Tübke portrayed Vogelsang ( portrait of Hans Vogelsang , Museum of Fine Arts , Leipzig) on behalf of the Leipzig District Council .
  • In 1973 he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Mittweida.
  • The radio and radio technology Störbataillon 18 of the NVA in Böhlendorf had since 1988 the honorary name of "Johannes Vogelsang".
