Johannes Frischauf
Johannes Frischauf (born September 17, 1837 in Vienna , † January 7, 1924 in Graz ) was an Austrian mathematician, physicist, astronomer, geodesist and alpinist.
Live and act
Johannes Frischauf passed his Matura at the Academic Gymnasium in Vienna and from 1857 studied mathematics, physics and astronomy at the University of Vienna and geodesy, chemistry and mechanics at the Technical University. In 1861 he became a Doctor Ph.D. , Associate Professor of Mathematics at the University of Vienna and assistant at the University observatory. In 1863 he completed his habilitation in mathematics. From 1866 he worked as a professor at the University of Graz for pure and applied mathematics. He worked with Ludwig Boltzmann . Johannes von Frischauf developed a new theory of card design and wrote school books on arithmetic and geometry. In 1885 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

From 1868 Johannes Frischauf was a pioneer in the tourist development in the Sannthaler and Steiner Alps , opening up paths and huts. The roads over the Paulitschsattel and the connection Sulzbach - Leutsch go back to his mission. Together with Franz von Juraschek and Mathias Spreiz he was the first to climb the Admonter Reichenstein in Gesaeuse. In a time of fierce national conflicts, Frischauf took the view that mountaineering should not be subordinate to nationalism, religion or political stance. He was involved in the establishment of the Croatian Mountaineering Society (Hrvatski Planinarski Savez). To this day, a refuge in the Sannthal Alps is named after him.
Frischauf's urn was buried on the top of the sheikh . His estate is at the University of Graz .
Appreciation
In 1973 the city of Graz named a street in the Andritz district after him (Frischaufweg) in his honor .
