John Anderson, 1st Viscount Waverley GCB , OM , GCSI , GCIE , PC (born July 8, 1882 in Edinburgh , Scotland , † January 4, 1958 in London ) was a British politician who was not only a minister , but also governor of Bengal was.

biography

After attending school, Anderson initially studied mathematics and geology at the University of Edinburgh and later completed another degree in chemistry at the University of Leipzig . In 1905, however, he renounced an academic career and instead joined the Colonial Office as an employee .

In 1919 he was raised to the nobility as Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath . In 1920 he became the last British Undersecretary for Ireland and thus until 1922 not only Chairman of the Public Service in Ireland , but also advisor to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland , the representative of the British King in Ireland. He was then Permanent Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of the Interior ( Home Office ) between 1922 and 1932 . In 1923 he was raised to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath.

After ten years in the Ministry of the Interior, he was Governor of Bengal from 1932 to 1937. As such, he was inducted into the Order of the Indian Empire as Knight Grand Commander in 1932 and into the Order of the Star of India as Knight Grand Commander in 1937 . After he made India had returned, he became in 1938 deputy in the lower house ( House of Commons ) and represented there until the dissolution of the " constituency " in 1950 the interests of the universities of Scotland .

In 1938 he was appointed to the government for the first time as Lord Seal Keeper by Prime Minister Arthur Neville Chamberlain and, after a cabinet reshuffle, was Minister of the Interior from 1939 to 1940 .

Anderson was raised to hereditary peer in 1952 as Viscount Waverley , of Westdean in the County of Sussex . As a result, he was a member of the House of Lords until his death . He was also a member of the Royal Society . The Anderson Glacier in Antarctica is named in his honor .

Anderson died on January 4, 1958 in St Thomas' Hospital , London.
