John Anthony Baldessari (born June 17, 1931 in National City , California , † January 2, 2020 in Venice , California) was an American artist and an important representative of contemporary conceptual and media art .

Life

At the beginning of his artistic career there was painting, but in 1970 he burned all of his paintings from 1953 to 1966 in the sensational "Cremation Project". From this point on, Baldessari devoted himself to working with images and languages as well as the interrelationships between these two forms of expression.

Through his pictures, photographic works, video performances, collages, cut-ups and, ultimately, his conceptual art, the artist investigated the mechanisms of media representation. His works have been shown in more than 120 international solo exhibitions and over 300 group exhibitions.

For the 2017/2018 season in the Vienna State Opera , he designed the huge large picture (176 m²) “Graduation” as the 20th work of art for the “Iron Curtain” exhibition series conceived by museum in progress .

John Baldessari has taught at the California Institute of the Arts and the University of California, Los Angeles . He died in California in early 2020 at the age of 88.
