John Gobbi (born September 25, 1981 in Faido ) is a former Swiss - Italian ice hockey player who was under contract in the Swiss National League A with HC Ambrì-Piotta , Genève-Servette HC , the ZSC Lions and Lausanne HC .
Career
Gobbi comes from the junior division of HC Ambrì-Piotta , where his parents run the stadium restaurant. After going through all of the Ticino junior teams, Gobbi came to the Fanion team for the first time in the 1999/2000 season. He played a total of 14 games in the first team that season, but still had no scorer point.
During the 2001/02 season, Gobbi, who was considered one of the toughest defenders in Swiss ice hockey, was loaned out for a total of 22 games to HC Sierre in the National League B , but returned to his home club. Since the coach of the league rival Genève-Servette HC Chris McSorley Gobbi had been watching for a long time, he moved to western Switzerland for the 2004/05 season, where he became a national player. In the summer of 2011 he switched to the ZSC Lions , with whom he won the Swiss championship in the 2011/12 season. In November 2012 he returned to his home club HC Ambrì-Piotta until the end of the 2012/13 season. For the 2013/14 season he was signed by the NLA promoted Lausanne HC . After the end of the 2017/18 season, he ended his playing career.
International
Since 2007 Gobbi was repeatedly included in the extended squad of the national team for the respective world championships, but missed the last cut every time and had to travel home as surplus. At the 2011 World Cup in Slovakia , however, his Geneva teammate Goran Bezina injured his shoulder in the game against Canada and could not be used in the further course of the tournament, which prompted Swiss national coach Sean Simpson to nominate Gobbi. He came to three missions in the course of the tournament.
