John Jestyn Llewellin, 1st Baron Llewellin , GBE , MC , TD , PC (born February 6, 1893 in Chevening , Kent ; † January 24, 1957 ) was a British officer and politician of the Conservative Party , who was a member of the 1929-1945 lower House ( House of Commons ), 1942 trade Minister (President of the Board of trade ) , 1942 Minister of aircraft production (Minister of aircraft production) and 1943-1945 Food Minister (Minister of Food) was. In 1945 he was raised to hereditary nobility as Baron Llewellin and was a member of the House of Lords until his death . Most recently he was Governor General of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland between 1953 and his death in 1957 .

Life

Llewellin, son of William Llewellin and his wife Frances Mary Wigan, attended the prestigious Eton College and trained as an officer of the Royal Garrison Artillery . He was wounded while participating in World War I and was awarded the Military Cross (MC) in 1917 . He then began studying at the University College of the University of Oxford , which he in 1917 with a Bachelor of Arts graduated (BA). A subsequent postgraduate course at University College of the University of Oxford, he finished in 1920 with a Master of Arts (MA). In 1921 he was admitted to the bar as a barrister with the Inner Temple Bar Association ( Inns of Court ) . In 1926 he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).

In the election of May 30, 1929 Llewellin was for the first time a member of the House of Commons for the Conservative Party and represented the constituency of Uxbridge there until July 5, 1945 . Between 1931 and 1935 he was first private parliamentary secretary and then between 1935 and 1937 parliamentary director ( Whip ) of the faction of the conservative Tories in the lower house. He also served between 1932 and 1938 as a lieutenant colonel and with the brevet rank as a colonel in the Dorset Heavy Brigade of the Royal Artillery . For his services in the Territorial Army , he was awarded the Territorial Decoration (TD). In the third national government of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain , he served between May 28, 1937 and July 14, 1939 as Civil Lord of the Admiralty (Civil Lord of the Admiralty) . In 1939 he was also Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). He then became Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Supply on July 14, 1939, and held this office in Chamberlain's wartime government until May 10, 1940.

World War II and Minister

In the wartime government of Prime Minister Winston Churchill Llewellin initially served from May 10, 1940 to May 1, 1941 as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Aircraft Production . Member of the House of Lords and Governor General of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland

After his departure from the House of Commons and government, Llewellin was raised to the hereditary nobility of the Peerage of the United Kingdom on September 12, 1945 as Baron Llewellin , of Upton in the County of Dorset, and was thus a member of the House of Lords until his death. On August 1, 1953, he was beaten to the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire.

Most recently, Lord Llewellin became the first Governor General of the newly created Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland on September 4, 1953. He held this office until his death on January 24, 1957.
