John McFall, Baron McFall of Alcluith

John Francis McFall, Baron McFall of Alcluith PC (born October 4, 1944 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a British politician ( Labor and Co-operative Party ). From 1987 to 2010 he was a Member of the House of Commons . He was best known as chairman of the House of Commons Treasury Committee .

life and career

McFall attended a boys' school, St Patrick's Secondary School (now Our Lady & St Patrick's High School ) in Castlehill , Dumbarton, and left without a degree at the age of 15. His father was a school janitor, his mother the owner of a newspaper kiosk. John McFall worked as an auxiliary horticulturalist with the Local Parks Department and as a factory worker.

At the age of 24 he began his studies at Paisley College of Technology, later University of Paisley and, since 2007, University of the West of Scotland , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in chemistry . In 1977 he received a Bachelor of Arts from the Open University in Education and Philosophy . From 1974 to 1987 he worked as a chemistry and mathematics teacher in Dumbarton , Kirkintilloch and Glasgow , most recently as deputy headmaster. In 1971 Mc Fall joined the Labor Party and, before he was elected to parliament, became party secretary in his later constituency. He turned down the proposal to become a councilor. During his time as a teacher , he completed a part-time course at the University of Strathclyde for three years in order to achieve a Master of Business Administration . In 1994 he became visiting professor at Strathclyde University Business School and is currently (July 2010) a member of the Advisory Board of the University of Glasgow Business School . He is also a member of the GMB Union .

Membership in the House of Commons

He was first elected to the House of Commons for the constituency of Dumbarton in Scotland in the 1987 general election, after previous MP Ian Campbell, 12th Duke of Argyll, did not run again. McFall was elected with a majority of just over 2,000 votes. In the general election of 2005 he entered the new constituency of West Dunbartonshire and won with a majority of over 12,500 votes.

He was a whip for the opposition and was responsible for foreign policy , defense , trade and industry .

During the Gulf War , he resigned from office in protest of the Labor government's support for the Gulf War. In the shadow cabinet , he was Deputy Minister for Scotland.

From 1997 to 1998 he was Lord Commissioner of Her Majesty's Treasury as Government Whip .

He was Secretary of State for Education, Training and Employment, Health and Community Relations , then in 1998/1999 for Business and Education in the Northern Ireland Office (NIO).

In 2001 he was elected Chairman of the Treasury Select Committee and in 2005 he was re-elected for a second term. This committee conducted investigations into the banking crisis , presented evidence of bonus payments and unskilled practices among many bankers , and found poor oversight by the Financial Services Authority . In 2004 he was admitted to the Privy Council .

On January 29, 2010, McFall announced that he would no longer run for the 2010 general election.

He was a member of various special committees ( Select Committees ). He was Honorary Secretary to the Parliamentary & Scientific Committee and a member of the Executive Committee Parliamentary Group for Energy Studies . He was also Vice Chairman of the British / Italian Group , Secretary of the Retail Industry Group and the Roads Study Group . At the British / Peru Group he was Deputy Secretary ( Joint Secretary ). He was Treasurer ( Treasurer ) of the British / Hong Kong Group and the Scotch Whiskey Group .

Membership in the House of Lords

On June 17, 2010, McFall was named a Life Peer as Baron McFall of Alcluith , of Dumbarton in the County of Dunbartonshire , and was officially inducted into the House of Lords on June 6 . He cites defense, education, economic policy , cooperatives ( co-operative development ) and the developing world as his political interests . He names the countries of Latin America , the Middle East and Romania as states of particular interest .

Other offices

McFall is chairman of Strathleven Regeneration Company , which he co-founded, and re-built by Clydebank , two development companies in his constituency.

Family and private

He is married, his wife Joan is also a teacher and from Dumbarton . You have four children. McFall has run marathons in the past , but not in the last ten years (as of July 2010).
