Mithun Chakraborty (actually Gouranga Chakraborty ; Bengali : মিঠুন চক্রবর্তী, Miṭhun Cakrabartī; born June 16, 1950 in Calcutta , West Bengal , India ) is an Indian film actor and dancer of Hindi films . Life

After attending the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune , Chakraborty had his first leading role in Mrinal Sens's political film Mrigaya (1976). For his portrayal of a young native hunter in Orissa in the 1930s , he immediately received a National Film Award in the "Best Actor" category. At the beginning of his career, Chakraborty attracted attention through politically and historically committed films such as KA Abbas ' The Naxalites (1979) about the Naxalite and student movement of the 1970s or Bapus feudal drama Hum Paanch (1980).

In the 1980s he established his image as a love and action hero in medium-budget film productions and was considered by producers to be a cheaper variant of Amitabh Bachchan's , but an equally safe investment. He was able to win over a wide audience for himself in the role of the street dancer Jimmi with Subhash Ghai's box office hits Disco Dancer (1983) and Dance Dance (1987) both domestically and in the USSR and Turkey . Chakraborty played alongside Dharmendra in JP Duttas Ghulami (1985) and - as often in the 70s and early 80s - Smita Patil , Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Naseeruddin Shah . In the late 80s he was used as the second leading actor alongside Amitabh Bachchan in Manmohan Desais Ganga Jamuna Saraswati (1988) and Mukul Anands Agneepath (1990).

Directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta , he starred in Tahader Katha (1992) for which he received his second of a total of three National Film Awards.

Chakraborty is an entrepreneur and owner of the Monarch Group, which operates in the hotel and catering industry. He is also known for his commitment to social issues; so he helped set up the Bengal Football Academy . He is married to the actress Yogeeta Bali and has three children.
