John Michael "Mike" Hayden (born March 15, 1944 in Colby , Kansas ) is an American politician . He was the 41st governor of the state of Kansas from 1987 to 1991 .

Early years and political advancement

Mike Hayden attended both Kansas State University , where he studied wildlife conservation, and Fort Hays State University , where he studied biology until 1974. For 13 months he was a soldier in the Vietnam War . Hayden's political career began in 1972 with his election to the Kansas House of Representatives . He held this mandate until 1986, where he was even President of Parliament in 1983 and 1985. There he campaigned for environmental protection programs and species protection. In 1986, Hayden was elected as the new governor of Kansas as the Republican Party candidate against Thomas R. Docking .

Kansas Governor

Hayden began his four-year term on January 12, 1987. During this time the budget was consolidated and then taxes were cut significantly. According to his origins, the governor was committed to environmental protection and biodiversity. He was also for the preservation of the countryside. On the other hand, he was strongly against alcohol and drug abuse. Hayden was chairman of the Association of Republican Governors. His government suffered from an internal conflict in his party, in which there was a conservative and a moderate faction. Hayden was on the moderate side and, for example, was in favor of abortion, while the Conservatives were against. The split hindered further political reforms.

Further life

In 1991, Hayden became a division head at the US Department of the Interior . There he was responsible for fishing issues and species protection. Between 1993 and 2001, Hayden was president of the American Sportfishing Association , a not-for-profit advocacy group dedicated to preserving fishing grounds and promoting environmental protection in the field. In 2003, Hayden was appointed Secretary of State for Conservation and Parks by Kathleen Sebelius , the new governor of Kansas. He held this office until the end of the term of office of Sebelius' successor Mark Parkinson in January 2011. Mike Hayden is married with two children.
