John Obi Mikel , real name John Michael Nchekube Obinna (born April 22, 1987 in Jos ), is a Nigerian soccer player who last played for Trabzonspor in Turkey . The midfielder is the captain of the Nigerian national team .

In the club

Mikel's career in Europe began in autumn 2005 when he moved to Oslo. Rune Hauge brokered the change on behalf of Chelsea FC from London. Chelsea covered both the training and salary costs of around 280,000 euros. Lyn Oslo converted Mikel's youth contract into a professional contract after his 18th birthday, and a week later he signed with Chelsea .

On September 21, 2013, in the game against Fulham FC, he scored his first goal in his 185th league game with a side pull to make it 2-0.

At the beginning of January 2017, Mikel left Chelsea after ten and a half years and switched to Tianjin Teda in the Chinese Super League . The Nigerian made 31 league appearances for the club in two seasons, but almost missed his entire first season due to stomach problems.

It was followed by a return to Europe , Mikel 30th matchday of the 2018/19 season the English second division club FC Middlesbrough joined. As fifth in the table, he just missed participation in the promotion play-offs with the club. He was also immediately a regular player and temporarily team captain.

Subsequently, Mikel moved to the Turkish Süper Lig to Trabzonspor . With the club he was able to qualify for the group stage of the Europa League , in which, however, they were eliminated in the end. On March 17, 2020, his contract with Trabzonspor was terminated amicably after the player criticized the fact that the game in the top Turkish league had not been suspended despite the global COVID-19 pandemic on the Instagram platform .

National team

At the U20 World Cup in the Netherlands in 2005 , Mikel was awarded the “Silver Ball” by journalists as the second best player in the tournament (after Lionel Messi ). He was the “thinker and guide” of the Nigerian team and led it to the final, which was lost to Argentina.

The midfielder successfully took part in the Africa Cup 2006 with the A selection , in which he scored a goal and, as the successor to Jay-Jay Okocha, led the Nigerian senior team to 3rd place. At the Africa Cup 2013 he won the title with Nigeria. Just one year later, at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was called up as a regular player in the Nigerian squad , which was not the case four years earlier, at the 2010 World Cup . Mikel was part of the Nigerian team at the 2016 Olympic Games , which lost to Germany in the semi-finals and then won the bronze medal in the bronze game against Honduras. At the 2018 World Cup in Russia , Mikel was the team captain of the Nigerians; his team was eliminated in the group stage with three points.
