John William Morrison, 2nd Viscount Dunrossil CMG KStJ (born May 22, 1926 in London , † March 22, 2000 in Lanzarote , Canary Islands , Spain ) was a British diplomat , politician and administrative officer who inherited the title of Viscount Dunrossil in 1961 and thereby from 1961 until the entry into force of the House of Lords Act on November 11, 1999 was a member of the House of Lords . He served as governor of Bermuda between 1983 and 1988 and as Lord Lieutenant of the Outer Hebrides from 1993 until his death in 2000 .

Life

Family origins, pilot officer and diplomat

John William Morrison was the eldest of four sons of the politician William Shepherd Morrison , who was a member of the Conservative Party between 1929 and 1959 and a spokesman for the House of Commons from 1951 to 1959 , and served as minister several times. He was raised to the hereditary nobility on November 12, 1959 as the 1st Viscount Dunrossil, of Vallaquie in the Isle of North Uist and County of Inverness, and was a member of the House of Lords until his death on February 3, 1961 . The last was the 1st Viscount Dunrossil and from February 2, 1960 until his death was Governor General of Australia .

John William Morrison himself completed his education at Fettes College and entered 1945 in the Royal Air Force (RAF), which he called 1948 Captain (Flight Lieutenant) left. He was then still between 1948 and 1953 a member of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (RAFVR), the volunteer reserve of the Royal Air Force. In addition, he studied at Oriel College of the University of Oxford , which he in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts finished (BA). A subsequent postgraduate course at Oriel College, he completed in 1951 with a Master of Arts (MA).

1951 Morrison entered the service of the then Ministry of Relations with the Commonwealth (Commonwealth Relations Office) . House of Lords, High Commissioner and Governor

After the death of his father, John William Morrison inherited the title of 2nd Viscount Dunrossil, of Vallaquie in the Isle of North Uist and County of Inverness on February 3, 1961 . This also made him a member of the House of Lords, which he belonged to until the House of Lords Act came into force on November 11, 1999.

In 1961 Morrison moved to the service of the State Department, now the Ministry of Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs ( Foreign and Commonwealth Office ) . He was first secretary to the High Commissioner in South Africa between 1961 and 1964 , before he was seconded to the International Maritime Organization , based in London, from 1968 to 1970 . He was then from 1970 to 1974 Counselor and Head of the Office of the High Commissioner in Canada and then from 1975 to 1978 Counselor at the Embassy in Belgium . He was then High Commissioner in Fiji between 1978 and 1982 and High Commissioner in Barbados from 1982 to 1983, and in this role he also received a letter of introduction for double accreditation as High Commissioner in Antigua and Barbuda , Dominica , Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines .

In July 1983 Viscount Dunrossil succeeded Mark Herdman as governor of Bermuda and remained in this office until he was replaced by Desmond Langley in 1988. As governor, he was also supreme commander of the British armed forces in Bermuda . He was involved in the establishment of community organizations such as the St. John Ambulance Brigade , the headquarters on Paget Island named after him in Dunrossil House . In 1983 he became Knight of Justice of the Order of Saint John (KStJ).

As the successor to Granville Leveson-Gower, 5th Earl Granville , Viscount Dunrossil became Lord Lieutenant of the Outer Hebrides in 1993. He held this position as representative of the British monarch until his death.

Marriages and offspring

Morrison has been married twice. His first marriage to Mavis Dawn Spencer-Payne, which was closed on July 3, 1951 and divorced in 1969, resulted in three sons and a daughter, including Andrew William Reginald Morrison , who inherited the title of 3rd Viscount Dunrossil after his death on March 22, 2000 . His second marriage to Diana Mary Cunliffe Vise on December 5, 1969 resulted in two more daughters.
