John Wilfred Stanier

Sir John Wilfred Stanier , GCB , MBE (* 6. October 1925 in Hatfield Heath , Sawbridgeworth , Hertfordshire , Essex , † 10. November 2007 in Hartley Wintney , Hampshire ) was a British field marshal (Field Marshal) , who most recently from 1982 to 1985 Chief of the General Staff of the British Army and from 1990 to 1996 constable of the Tower . He was the first chief of the general staff who no longer actively participated in World War II .

Life

Military training and use as an officer

Stanier was the only son of Harold Allen Stanier and Penelope Rose Price and was orphaned at the age of seven when his father died on April 23, 1932 at the age of only 34 as a result of serious injuries from the First World War . After visiting the Marlborough College he began studying at Merton College of the University of Oxford , before his military service in the 1946 7th Queen's Own Hussars began. In the following years he was stationed with his unit in Lüneburg and took part in operations in northern Italy and Hong Kong as a company commander of the C Company . After completing his training at Staff College Camberley , he became military assistant to Lieutenant General William Henry Stratton in 1957, who was Vice Chief of the Imperial General Staff from 1957 to 1960. In 1961 he became a member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). In the mid-1960s, after various other uses, to his disappointment, he did not become commander of the Queen's Own Hussars , which were created in 1958 from a merger of the 7th Queen's Own Hussars with the 3rd (The King's Own) Hussars , he initially intended to serve in the military Quit to work as a manager for Reed Paper Company and a defense correspondent for The Times . However, he refrained from these plans and was instead on January 1, 1966 as colonel in command of the Royal Scots Grays (2nd Dragoons) . He solved even then Major General Hugh Beach as commander of the Staff College Camberley and held this position until 1978, when Major General Frank Kitson took his place. For his services he was beaten on June 3, 1978 to Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) and thus led to the addition of "Sir".

Promotion to Field Marshall and Chief of General Staff

In 1978, Lieutenant General Stanier succeeded Lieutenant General William Scotter as Vice-Chief of the General Staff and held this position until he was replaced by Lieutenant General Thomas Morony in 1980. At the same time he was Colonel of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Grays) between 1979 and 1984 . In 1981 he took over from General Timothy Creasey as Commander-in-Chief of the UK Land Forces and remained in this position until 1982, when General Frank Kitson was his successor again. In this role he dealt with the organization of the army in the Falklands War. In addition, he was adjutant general of Queen Elizabeth II from 1981 to 1985 and Colonel Commandant of the Royal Armored Corps from 1982 to 1985 . On June 12, 1982 he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (GCB).

Last Stanier 1982 to Field Marshal (Field Marshal) appointed and replaced Field Marshal Edwin Bramall as Chief of General Staff of the British Army from. He was the first Chief of the General Staff who no longer actively participated in World War II . In 1985 he retired from active military service after 39 years of service and was replaced as Chief of the General Staff by Field Marshal Nigel Bagnall . After retiring from active service, Stanier was chairman of the Royal United Services Institute from 1986 to 1989 , an independent research institute in the UK dealing with national and international security issues. He also acted as the successor to Roland Gibbs from 1990 until he was replaced by Peter Inge in 1996 as constable of the Tower .

His marriage to Cicely Constance Lambert, daughter of Corvette Captain Denis M. Lambert, had four daughters on November 19, 1955 at Danbury Parish Church, Essex .
