John Wood (actor)

John Wood , CBE (born July 5, 1930 in Derbyshire , England - † August 6, 2011 in Chipping Campden , Gloucestershire ) was a British actor .

Life

John Wood studied law at Jesus College , Oxford , during which time he discovered his interest in acting. He later worked at the Old Vic Theater , where he appeared alongside Richard Burton , and at the Royal Court.

Wood played his first film role in the drama A Stolen Face from 1952. In the comedy Rendezvous with a Corpse (1978), he appeared in one of the larger roles alongside Farrah Fawcett and Jeff Bridges . For his role as Dr. Stephen Falken in the science fiction thriller WarGames (1983), he was nominated for the Saturn Award in 1984. In the comedy Jumpin 'Jack Flash he appeared alongside Whoopi Goldberg , in Heartburn alongside Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson . In the film remake Sabrina (1995) he played the role of Sabrina's father. He was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award in 2001 for his role in the film Chocolat - A Small Bite Enough (2000) .

Wood won the Tony Award in 1976 for his role in the play Travesties , and was nominated for the same award in 1968 and 1975. In 1991 he received the London Evening Standard Theater Award and in 1998 he was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award .

Wood married twice and had four children.
