Joop Ayal

Joop Ayal (born September 18, 1925 in Kisar ; † May 28, 2013 in Brussels ) was a Dutch jazz musician ( baritone and tenor saxophone , also flute , vocals, arrangement) of Indonesian origin.

Live and act

Ayal migrated to the Netherlands in 1948, where he accompanied Rita Reys . In 1951 he moved to Belgium. Until 1965 he played in Brussels with Francis Bay in Au Gaity and other Brussels jazz clubs. He first studied counterpoint at the Académie Royale in Brussels, then arrangement and orchestration at the Berklee School of Music in Boston . Then he worked for BRT in the big band of Charlie Calmeyn , entered the combos of Al Goyens and Johnny Dover and led his own quintet, with whom he at 1976 Jazz Middelheim occurred. In the late 1980s Ayal recorded with the Waso Quartet by Koen De Cauter and Fapy Lafertin . In the 1990s he was a member of Vicky Down's orchestra and the Retro Jazz Orchestra . He also worked with Roger Vanhaverbeke , Richard Rousselet, Gino Lattucca, Marc Mercini and Didian.

Ayal can also be heard on the album It Had to Be You (2010) by his daughter, the singer Lena Ayal , for which he also arranged.
