José Higinio Gómez González

José Higinio Gómez González OFM (born April 3, 1932 in Lalín , Pontevedra Province , Galicia , Spain ; † January 8, 2008 in Lugo , Lugo Province ) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Lugo.

Life

José Higinio Gómez González attended the Franciscan Schools in Herbón near Padrón and Puenteareas. In 1948 he joined the Order of the Franciscans (OFM) and made his perpetual profession on August 18, 1953. He studied philosophy and theology in the Franciscan seminaries in Puenteareas and Santiago de Compostela and then moral theology at the Pontifical University Antonianum in Rome. He was ordained a priest on June 24, 1956 in Rome and graduated from the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome in 1959 in Canon Law and in 1960 in Roman Law . In 1961 he was with a study on marriage law to Doctor iuris utriusque ( "Doctor of Laws" lat.) PhD . After pastoral stays in Italy and Germany, he taught marriage and family law at several universities from 1962 and was rector of the Franciscan University in Santiago de Compostela and Provincial of the Franciscan Province of Santiago. From 1976 to 1980 he was Apostolic Delegate for the Institute for Consecrated Life of the Archdiocese of Santiago de Compostela .

In 1980 he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Lugo by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained bishop on June 28, 1980, by Luigi Dadaglio , then Apostolic Nuncio in Spain ; Co- consecrators were Angel Suquía Goicoechea , then Archbishop of Santiago de Compostela, and Carlos Amigo Vallejo , then Bishop of Tangier.
