José Manuel Caballero Bonald (born November 11, 1926 in Jerez de la Frontera , † May 9, 2021 in Madrid ) was a Spanish writer and poet .

Caballero Bonald's father was of Cuban origin , a Republican and a member of the Partido Reformista . His mother comes from the French noble family Vicomte de Bonald. From 1949 to 1952 he studied philosophy and literature in Seville . During his student days he met authors from the Cordobes magazine Cántico , for example Pablo García Baena .

In 1952 he published his first volume of poetry, Las adivinaciones , after winning a side prize with it in the competition for the Premio Adonáis . Two years later he won the Platero de poesía .

In 1954 and 1956 he published his poetry collections Memorias de poco tiempo and Anteo . He worked as a secretary and later as deputy director of the magazine Papeles de Son Armadans . He worked in secret with Dionisio Ridruejo . In 1959 he published Las horas muertas ; for this book he received the Premio Boscán and the Premio de la Crítica .

From 1959 to 1962 he made the acquaintance of poets who later formed the Grupo del 50 . In February 1959 he took part in the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of Antonio Machado's death in Collioure , together with Blas de Otero , José Agustín Goytisolo , Jaime Gil de Biedma , Carlos Barral and others.

His further life took him to Latin America. In Bogotá he taught Spanish literature and humanities at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia . There he wrote his first novel Dos días de septiembre , which was awarded the Premio Biblioteca Breve in 1961 and published a year later. His first son was also born in Bogotá.

Caballero Bonald became acquainted with the group of writers around the Colombian literary magazine Mito , including Jorge Gaitán Durán , Gabriel García Márquez , Eduardo Cote , Hernando Valencia , Pedro Gómez Valderrama and others. In Mito 1961 Caballero Bonald appeared lyrical anthology El papel del coro . He toured a number of Latin American countries. In 1963 he returned to Spain. He published the volume of poetry liegos de cordel , and the travel volume Cádiz, Jerez y los Puertos . He was arrested and sentenced for political reasons. In 1965 he traveled to Cuba for some time . In 1966 in Baeza , Andalusia , he worked in the association in memory of Antonio Machado; this was eventually banned by the government. In 1968 he published a short story about the Cuban revolution . He was arrested again for political reasons and held in Carabanchel for a month .

1969–1970 he published a collection of all of his previously published poems under the title Vivir para contarlo . In 1969 he published his Archivo del cante flamenco , an album of six records with accompanying text; it was awarded the Premio Nacional del Disco . Travels took him to several European countries. 1971–1975 he worked in the Seminario de Lexicografía of the Real Academia Española . He planned this institute together with Camilo José Cela . He was in love with Cela's first wife, Rosario Conde, for seven years.

He also took up a job in 1973 as the literary publishing director of Ediciones Júcar ; there he also worked until 1975. At several European universities he gave courses on narrative literature and took part in literary symposia. In 1974 he published the novel Ágata ojo de gato . He was awarded the Premio de la Crítica ; Caballero Bonald did not accept the Barral Prize for the same work. A long series of other literary publications, awards, conferences and courses have followed to this day. Also stage works by him came to the Performance: 1994 which led Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico his version of Don Gil de las Calzas verdes by Tirso de Molina , and in 1997 the dancing company of Antonio Gades his ballet adaptation of Fuenteovejuna .

1974–1978 he was professor of contemporary Spanish literature at the Centro de Estudios Hispánicos at Bryn Mawr College . In 1978 he was elected President of the Spanish PEN Club ; he resigned from this office in 1980.

In 1986 the educational institute that bears his name was founded in Jerez. In 1992 a city library with his name opened in Marbella . In 1998 the city of Jerez de la Frontera founded the Fundación Caballero Bonald .

In 1997 and 2001, Tiempo de guerras perdidas and La costumbre de vivir, the two volumes of his contemporary historical memories, were published. In 2004 he published his entire poetic work under the title Somos el tiempo que nos queda . In the same year he was appointed Doctor Honoris Causa by the Universidad de Cádiz . In 2012 he published his autobiography in verse with Entreguerras o De la naturaleza de las cosas . In November of the same year he was honored with the Premio Cervantes .

In 2006 he published the monograph Luces y sombras del flamenco together with the photographer Colita .

José Manuel Caballero Bonald was married to Josefa Ramis Cabot, with whom he published a number of works.
