Colita

Colita , actually Isabel Steva Hernández , (born on August 24, 1940 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish photographer .

education

Colita studied up to the age of 17 at the college Sagrat Cor ( Catalan ; Spanish Sagrado Corazón ). After a literary preparatory course , she moved to Paris and studied French culture at the Sorbonne Université .

Photographic work

On returning to Barcelona, she met the photographers Oriol Maspons , Julio Ubiña and Xavier Miserachs , from whom she learned the craft skills of a professional photographer. In 1961 she worked for Xavier Miserachs as a laboratory assistant and stylist for a year.

In 1962 she worked as a photographer for the film Los Tarantos by director Francesc Rovira Beleta . She made friends with the actress in the lead role, the flamenco dancer Carmen Amaya . She was passionate about flamenco and moved to Madrid, where she settled for two years. Among other things, she photographed Antonio Gades and La Chunga . The result of this time is her book Luces y sombras del Flamenco , written together with José Manuel Caballero Bonald, from 1975, which was reissued and expanded in 1998 and 2006.

During the last years of Franquism she lived in Barcelona and worked there for the then current progressive magazines, in particular Fotogramas , Tele / eXprés , Mundo Diario and Destino . Her first exhibition was in 1965 Evocación del modernismo at the Colegio de Arquitectos ; a group exhibition of visual artists: Daniel Argimon , Colita, Jordi Curós , Jordi Galí , Josep Guinovart , Oriol Maspons , Albert Ràfols-Casamada , Tharrats and Romà Vallès . She switched from press photography to film photography and worked with the directors of the so-called Escuela de Barcelona : Vicente Aranda , Jaime Camino , Jacinto Esteva , José Duràn . This group had the goal of creating a European progressive cinema, in contrast to the cinema of the Franco regime. This gave her the opportunity to work with well-known Spanish directors such as Luis Cuadrado , Juan Amorós and Fernando Arribas .

In 1967 she worked with the Edigsa record company and the Catalan New Song Movement. She created album covers and posters for press and advertising campaigns, especially for Guillermina Motta , Núria Feliu and Joan Manuel Serrat . She later specialized in portrait photography and became a photographer for the intellectual and artist group Gauche divine . In 1971 she presented a collection of portraits for an exhibition at the Galería Aixelà. It was the shortest exhibition in her career because the police closed it the day after it opened. Her love for crime novels and mystery prompted Beatriz de Moura, director of the Tusquets Editores publishing house , to entrust her with the series Serie Negra . At the same time, she headed the photography department of the Vindicación Feminista magazine until 1978 . During the democratic transition she worked with the magazines Interviú , Reporter , Cuadernos para el diálogo , La Calle and Bocaccio . Her long-term collaboration with Joan Manuel Serrat resulted in the El Serrat de Colita exhibition in 1998. In the same year, the city of Barcelona, together with the photographers Oriol Maspons and Leopoldo Pomés , awarded her the Medalla al Mérito Artístico (Medal of Merit for Art).

In 2014 she was to be honored with the Premio Nacional de Fotografía . With reference to the situation of culture and education in Spain, she rejected the award. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the resolution of the Spanish Constitution , the exhibition El poder del arte (the power of art) was organized, including works from the holdings of the Museo de Arte Reina Sofïa and works by her. For the first time her work was exhibited at the Congreso de los Diputados and the Senado .

In 2019 they took part in the exhibition Poéticas de las emocione s at CaixaForum Barcelona . In addition to her, the contemporary artists Bill Viola , Manuel Miralles, Shirin Neshat , Esther Ferrer and Pipilotti Rist were represented there.

In 44 years of work, Colita took part in more than 40 exhibitions and published more than 30 photography books. After the disappearance of the Franco regime and the emergence of democratic city administrations, she devoted herself to the city of Barcelona and its changes as well as the representation of the cultural and social life of Catalonia.
