Josemi - with full name José Miguel González Rey (born November 15, 1979 in Torremolinos ) - is a former Spanish football player . He could play both in defense and as a central defender.

Player career

Josemi began his career in professional football with FC Málaga . After he had already played in the second Andalusian team from 1998 to 2000 , he was given the chance to prove himself in the professional team in 2000. In the following four years he was able to become an undisputed regular player. In the summer of 2004 he became the first transfer of the new Liverpool coach , the Spaniard Rafael Benítez . He joined the Reds for £ 2 million . At the very first attempt he was able to win the UEFA Champions League with the English in 2005 against AC Milan . However, he himself was not used in the final game.

Josemi was initially able to prevail in Liverpool , but after a red card in the game against FC Fulham , Steve Finnan was again first choice as right-back. So in January 2006 he left for his Spanish homeland, where he was transferred to Villarreal in exchange with Jan Kromkamp . Just a few months later he almost made it back to a European Cup final, but the Spaniards were eliminated in the Champions League semi-finals against Arsenal .

In summer 2008 he moved to the Spanish first division club RCD Mallorca , where he played until the 2010/11 winter break. He then moved to Iraklis Thessaloniki in Greece . With the club he had to relegate from the Super League at the end of the 2010/11 season . Josemi returned to Spain, where he signed with FC Cartagena in the Segunda División . There he was only used irregularly and was often on the substitute bench. At the end of the 2011/12 season he was relegated again.

In the summer of 2012, Josemi moved back to the Greek Super League with his move to Levadiakos . He acted as a regular in central defense and achieved relegation with his team in the 2012/13 season. He then joined league competitor Skoda Xanthi . In the 2013/14 season , he and his team secured the relegation class.

In summer 2014 Josemi moved to Atlético de Kolkata in the newly founded Indian Super League . He was a regular player and at times the captain of his team that won the 2014 championship. A year later he ended his career.
