Josef Kořenář (born January 31, 1998 in Vystrkov ) is a Czech ice hockey goalkeeper who has been under contract with the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League since July 2017 and for their farm team , the San Jose Barracuda , in American Hockey since October 2018 League plays.

Kořenář spent his junior years in the offspring of the former army sports club HC Dukla Jihlava , which had its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s. There he went through all teams up to the U20s of the club until the 2015/16 season, for whom the goalkeeper made his debut at the age of 17 due to his talent. In the summer of 2016, the goalkeeper was selected in the entry draft of the junior league United States Hockey League in the third round in 43rd place by the Lincoln Stars . Kořenář finally moved there for the 2016/17 season and shared the tasks between the posts with the American Cayden Primeau over the course of the game year . However, the statistics of the Czech, who parried 92.5 percent of the shots on his goal in 32 missions and thus overshadowed Primeau, did not lead to him - as hoped - from a National Hockey League franchise in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft selected.

Nevertheless, the 19-year-old found a new employer a few weeks after the draft. As a free agent , Kořenář received a three-year contract offer from the San Jose Sharks from the NHL. After signing the NHL entry contract , they sent him back to his home club in Jihlava on loan. The goalkeeper did not spend most of the 2017/18 season in the Duklas squad, but played - again on loan - in the second-rate first division for HC Benátky nad Jizerou . He also made his debut in the course of the game year for the professional team Dukla Jihlavas in the extra league . Despite the promotion to the regular goalkeeper in the relegation round - he replaced the previous duo consisting of his compatriot Jakub Škarek and the Norwegian Lars Volden - he was unable to prevent the traditional club from relegating to the first division.

As a result of the relegation, the goalkeeper returned to North America at the request of the Sharks and received a place in the roster of the San Jose Barracuda , the farm team of the San Jose Sharks, in the American Hockey League for the 2018/19 season . Kořenář shared the goalkeeping post there with the Canadian Antoine Bibeau during the season . In January 2019, the Czech was invited to the AHL All-Star Classic due to his performance .

International

On the international stage, Kořenář has represented his home country on numerous occasions since the U16s. He played his first international tournament with the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival 2015 , where the Czech team finished the ice hockey tournament by winning the silver medal. In the same year he also took part in the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament 2015 and the World Junior A Challenge 2015 in the role of substitute goalkeeper . The Czechs finished both tournaments outside the medal ranks. In addition, the goalkeeper came to the U18 Junior World Championship in 2016 and the U20 Junior World Championship in 2018 as a regular on a total of eleven missions.
