Josef Riehl (born August 31, 1842 in Bozen , South Tyrol , † February 17, 1917 in Innsbruck , Tyrol ) was an Austrian civil engineer and contractor and a brother of Alois Riehl .

Life

After finishing school, Josef Riehl studied first at the Technical University of Karlsruhe and then at the Technical University of Munich . He gained his first professional experience in 1864 while building the Brenner Railway . He then worked on the routing of the Pustertal Railway and on railway construction in Hungary. In 1870 he finally founded the J. Riehl construction company for road and railroad construction .

Together with his manager Karl Innerebner , Josef Riehl played a key role in the development of Tyrol at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Many rail and road projects were developed by him and in some cases also carried out. One of his most spectacular - albeit not implemented - projects was a suspension railway from Fulpmes to the Fronebenalm, where the Schlick ski area is today.

Projects by Josef Riehl:

Riehl sold his construction company on February 10, 1916 to his employee Karl Innerebner, the civil engineer August Mayer and his father-in-law, the building contractor Wilhelm Carl von Doderer . From then on, the company traded as Innerebner & Mayer, formerly J. Riehl OHG . Today it is still active in the construction business as Innerebner & Mayer GmbH .

Honors

In 1912 Riehl was appointed senior building officer. He was an honorary citizen of the communities of Fulpmes , Seefeld , Ehrwald , Lermoos and Innsbruck and an honorary doctorate from the Vienna University of Technology . After his death he was buried in a city grave of honor at the Pradl military cemetery.

According to him, one was in Fulpmes Riehlstraße named in Seefeld a Riehlweg in Innsbruck near the Western Railway Station , a Dr.-Ing-Riehl Street . The forecourt of the mountain station of the Renon cable car in Soprabolzano was named Josef-Riehl-Platz .
