Josef Smolík

Josef Smolík (born March 27, 1922 in Jičín ; † February 4, 2009 in Prague ) was a Czech Protestant theologian , pastor of the Evangelical Church of the Bohemian Brethren , professor at the Prague Protestant Hus and Comenius Faculty and dean of Charles University .

Life

Smolik obtained his university entrance qualification after attending school and studied Protestant theology in illegal seminar courses during the Second World War . He then worked as a parish deacon of the Evangelical Church of the Bohemian Brethren in Rokycany , then as a vicar in Pardubice and Prague and completed a one-year course at the Union Theological Seminary in New York . In 1949 he was elected pastor of the evangelical parish in Pardubice. From 1962 to 1966 he did his pastoral service at the Evangelical Salvator Church in Prague. In 1950 he obtained his habilitation and was a lecturer for Practical Theology at the Hus - Faculty in Prague. In 1966 he was appointed professor and held lectures and seminars at the Prague Faculty of Protestant Theology, which is now called the Comenius Faculty. In 1980/81 he was a visiting professor at the University of Erlangen . After his return he worked in Prague until his retirement in 2003. From 1978 onwards he was the dean of this faculty for five terms. In 1990 he was re-elected when he campaigned for the reintegration of this faculty into the university.

He was represented in ecumenical organizations and bodies, in the central committee of the Geneva World Council of Churches , in the Faith and Order Commission of the WCC and as long-time chairman of the Brothers' Union of Constance . He also became involved in an exchange of letters with students how the Reformed Theological Seminary of Wuppertal in its web Chronicle reports. Smolík was a member of the Christian Peace Conference and was elected to working committees of this conference at the All-Christian Peace Assemblies that it called.

After his death, he and his life's work was remembered at a memorial service in Prague's Evangelical Salvator Church.
