Life

Wonsidler was born as the son of a family resident in the district of the Graz Cathedral Parish. He attended school here and then took the subject of rhetoric at the Graz Lyceum . Since his father, a civil servant, died early, he had to drop out of college for financial reasons. He completed a commercial apprenticeship in a trading company for hardware in the Slavonian town of Esseg , which it appears to be run by relatives. He then moved to Vienna and began working in the art trade. It was during this time that Wonsidler, it seems, discovered his inclination towards painting. After a short period of life in Budapest , he studied from 1821 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna with Professors Johann Peter Krafft and Anton Petter . In 1824 he completed his studies with the diploma of an "academic history painter".

Wonsidler later settled in Graz again, where most of his works were created. He received many orders from ecclesiastical and noble clients. He mainly created historical paintings with a religious theme for country churches and chapels, but also portraits and landscapes for private houses. In September 1858 Wonsidler died, highly regarded as a portrait and church painter, in house no. 429 in the Graz suburb of Münzgraben. Today his pictures can be found especially in Styria and Carinthia.
