Joseph Ferdinand Adolf Achaz von der Schulenburg (born June 1, 1776 in Angern ; † November 5, 1831 in Berlin ) was a royal Prussian officer, most recently in the rank of lieutenant general .

family

Joseph Ferdinand Adolf Achaz Graf von der Schulenburg came from the Angern family of the younger white line of the original nobility from the Schulenburg family from the Altmark . Over the years, the family has among others four field marshals, 25 generals and four bishops. The House of Angern was elevated to the rank of count by diploma on July 20, 1753.

Alexander Friedrich Christoph Graf von der Schulenburg (* 1720), the father of Joseph Ferdinand Adolf Achaz, died in 1801. His mother Luise Eleonore (* 1743, † 1803) was born from Bismarck . He was one of the couple's seven children. His older brother Friedrich Graf von der Schulenburg (* 1769, † 1821) became the royal Prussian government president .

Military background

Schulenburg joined the Prussian army in 1791 and took part in the campaigns against France between 1792 and 1795, during the first coalition war. He fought, among other things, in the siege of Mainz (April 14 to July 23, 1793) and in the battles near Hochheim, Kostheim and Morlautern as well as in the battles near Pirmasens (September 14, 1793) and Kaiserslautern (November 28 and 30 1793). From 1792 he served in the Garde du Corps regiment . In 1803 he was promoted to staff assistant master. In August 1804 he accompanied Prince Louis Ferdinand of Prussia to the maneuvers of the Austrian army in Prague.

In the fourth coalition war from 1806 to 1807 Schulenburg fought in the battles near Gollau and Königsberg. In February 1807 he was promoted to Rittmeister and in June 1809 to major . At the beginning of December 1812, as a lieutenant colonel , he became commander of the Garde du Corps regiment.

Schulenburg fought with this unit at the beginning of the Wars of Liberation , and later he was given command of a Landwehr brigade . He took part in the battles at Großgörschen (May 2, 1813), Bautzen (May 20 and 21, 1813), Haynau (May 26, 1813), the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig (October 16 to 19, 1813), Arcis-sur -Aube (March 20-21, 1814), Ligny (June 16, 1815) and Waterloo (June 18, 1815), as well as the sieges of Maubeuge, Landrecies and Philippeville. At the end of November 1815, Schulenburg became inspector of the Landwehr in the Bielefeld administrative district. In December 1816 he received the Russian Order of Vladimir III. Class and in October 1817 he was appointed brigade commander in the 16th division . In 1818 he was given command of the 4th Cavalry Brigade and two years later, in 1820, he was promoted to major general . In 1825 Schulenburg was awarded the Red Eagle Order III. Class.

For health reasons, he had to resign from active service for the time being. In 1830, when he was appointed lieutenant general, he was granted his final retirement. Joseph Ferdinand Adolf Achaz Graf von der Schulenburg died on November 5, 1831 at the age of 55 in Berlin.

Marriage and offspring

Joseph Ferdinand Adolf Achaz Graf von der Schulenburg married Henriette Ernestine Luise von Schöning (* 1787; † 1827) on November 3, 1809 . They left a son, Adalbert Friedrich Alexander Karl Wilhelm August Graf von der Schulenburg (* 1817, † 1874), who also served as an officer in the Prussian army.
