Joseph Focke (also Josef Focke ; born October 17, 1906 in Saerbeck ; † October 28, 1990 in Mettingen ) was a German veterinarian and a local politician from North Rhine-Westphalia ( CDU ). From 1948 to 1951 he was mayor of the Mettingen / Recke office and from 1964 to 1969 mayor of the community of Mettingen.

Life

Joseph Focke was born on October 17, 1906, as one of eleven siblings on a farm in Saerbeck. He studied veterinary medicine in Hanover and Munich . At the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover, he received his doctorate in veterinary medicine (Dr. med. Vet.) In 1936 with his dissertation on Experiments with the chinosol preparation R 1148a in healthy and sick cattle . After obtaining his license to practice medicine, he settled in Mettingen in 1937. As a veterinarian, he gained a reputation far beyond the local borders and continued practicing for many years after reaching retirement age.

After the collapse of the National Socialist dictatorship and the end of World War II , Focke made himself available for the reconstruction. From 1945 to 1948 he was President of the Veterinary Association of Westphalia-Lippe. During this time, he personally helped numerous colleagues to gain a professional foothold after their release from prisoner-of-war. In addition, he started an aid campaign for the benefit of the widows and survivors of veterinarians who remained behind during the war, which brought in 50,000 DM.

In addition, Joseph Focke was significantly involved in the new beginning of political life in democratic structures in Mettingen, initially as honorary mayor of the Mettingen / Recke office from October 1948 to the dissolution of the local association in 1951. He then helped shape the political development of the Mettingen community. He was chairman of the CDU local union in Mettingen from 1955 to 1964 and was a member of the CDU parliamentary group on the local council from 1952 to 1956 and from 1961 to 1964, where he was also involved in several committees. In 1964 he was elected mayor of the community of Mettingen, but gave this honorary position back in 1969 for professional and age reasons. Josef Otte was elected as his successor .

Joseph Focke made a significant contribution to the fact that Mettingen recovered economically in the post-war period and developed so well that Tüöttendorf was one of the financially strongest communities in the Tecklenburg district at the end of the 1960s . He also earned services in the field of housing construction and the school system.

Here it was above all the Association of School Friends Mettingen eV (VdSF), as its chairman of the board of trustees from 1952 to 1977, Focke promoted a lot. He played a leading role in the reconstruction of the rectorate school closed by the National Socialists, the re-establishment of the secondary school for boys and girls, the development of the grammar school and the amalgamation of both institutions as Cardinal von Galen schools in the school center. When he stepped down from the chair in 1977, the VdSF awarded him honorary membership in recognition of his services.

The veterinarian had also been a hunter since 1924 and later a member of the Hegering Mettingen-Recke, of which he was temporarily head of the Hegering. The Hegering honored his services with the award of honorary membership. In addition, from 1945 he was chairman of the Mettinger riding club for many years. From 1946 to 1948 he also served as chairman of VfL Eintracht Mettingen.

Since 1939 Joseph Focke was also a member of the Mettinger Bürgererschützengesellschaft from 1711 and in 1961, in the jubilee year of its 250th anniversary, achieved royal dignity.

The Federal President awarded him the Cross of Merit on Ribbon of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his diverse socio-political work .

Due to illness, he spent the last years of his life largely withdrawn from the public, cared for by his wife Martha. Dr. med. vet. Joseph Focke died a few days after his 84th birthday on October 28, 1990. He found his final resting place in the new cemetery in Mettingen.

His son Karl Focke († 2009 ) was also active in Mettinger local politics.
