Joseph von Gumppenberg
Joseph Freiherr von Gumppenberg , full name Joseph Ferdinand Franz Hubert Freiherr von Gumppenberg zu Pöttmes and Brennberg (born November 9, 1798 in Munich , † February 1, 1855 in Landau , Pfalz ) was a Bavarian nobleman, general and fortress commander.
Live and act
He came from the Bavarian noble family von Gumppenberg and was born the son of Maximilian von Gumppenberg (1756–1803) and his second wife Marianne von Werneck (1759–1800). At the age of five the boy was an orphan and his uncle (his mother's brother) Reinhard von Werneck took over the upbringing as guardian. This was chief of the royal cadet corps in Munich, in which he took the nephew.
On September 13, 1815, Gumppenberg finished his military training there and joined the infantry body regiment as a lieutenant . Later he moved to the 2nd Chevaulegers Regiment "Taxis" in Ansbach . Then he became adjutant to General Karl Philipp von Diez (1769-1850) in Nuremberg . In 1829 he took the same position with General Friedrich von Treuberg (1775–1831) in Augsburg , then in Würzburg . After his death, the successors Karl Peter von Theobald (1769-1837) and Franz Xaver von Hertling (1780-1844) took over in the same office.
Hertling went to Munich as Minister of War in 1837 and took Gumppenberg with him as an adjutant. When he retired in 1838, he joined the General Staff and was promoted to captain. In 1839 his own brother Anton von Gumppenberg became Bavarian Minister of War and he now worked on his staff. In 1841 Joseph von Gumppenberg was a member of the commission which advised in Karlsruhe on the establishment of German federal fortresses . At the end of the negotiations he received the Knight's Cross of the Baden Order of the Zähringer Löwen .
In 1844 he resigned from active military service, became a major in the 1st Chevaulegers Regiment "Crown Prince" , and in 1849 Lieutenant Colonel in the 2nd Chevaulegers Regiment "Taxis". In 1850 the baron was promoted to colonel and he took over the management of the Bavarian gendarmerie corps. In this capacity he received the Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown on January 1, 1852 . For his services in securing the French / Bavarian border with the gendarmerie deployed there, the neighboring state raised him to the command of the Legion of Honor on October 6, 1853 .
On November 30 of the same year Joseph von Gumppenberg was promoted to major general and commandant of the Landau fortress . In this office he died on February 1, 1855 in Landau and was buried in the local cemetery. His Tumba tomb is preserved here (2012).
Joseph Freiherr von Gumppenberg remained unmarried. His nephew - the son of his eldest sister Therese Freiin von Gumppenberg (from his father's first marriage) - was Cardinal Karl August von Reisach (1800–1869).
