Joseph von Rudolphi , also Joseph von Rudolfi , (* May 16, 1666 as Wolfgang Ernst ; † March 7, 1740 in St. Gallen ) was abbot of the prince abbey of St. Gallen and master chef from 1717 .

Life

His parents were the lieutenant colonel and imperial commander in Constance Johann Christoph von Rudolphi and Maria Salome von Berneck , who came from Laibach . The Catholic Joseph von Rudolphi entered the St. Gallen monastery school in 1683 and took his religious vows in 1685 . After his election, the new abbot immediately sought to bring about peace and so negotiations began in Baden at the beginning of May 1718, six years after the end of the Toggenburg War . The 84-point peace instrument was signed on June 15, 1718. The treaty ratified by the abbot was brought to Zurich and Bern on August 6, 1718 , to be ratified there as well. Clement XI. however, rejected the treaty and riots broke out. Abbot von Rudolphi returned to Rorschach from exile on September 7, 1718. He began to receive the homage in Toggenburg . On October 11, he entered St. Gallen and on 15 October could table readings and Silentium , the next day midnight mass to be reintroduced. It was not until March 23, 1719 that the abbot was able to receive a large part of the library that had been brought to Zurich at the beginning of the war. Other items from the booty of the Bernese, including eight bells and seven fire engines , arrived in St. Gallen on May 5, 1721.

Von Rudolphi founded new parishes and divided Gossau and Oberriet . He introduced a new register of documents in the monastery archive and had escape boxes made. From 1719 to 1722, from 1724 to 1726, 1730 and from 1735 to 1736 the abbot carried out thorough visitations during which he got an overview of the local school conditions. In St. Gallen, von Rudolphi had a synod held on May 8th and 9th, 1737 . In 1721 he commissioned Caspar Moosbrugger to draw a crack for the new monastery church. Von Rudolphi established the exact boundary lines with the rulers bordering on St. Gallen.

On April 29, 1731, the abbot renewed the alliance with France from 1663. After a series of disputes in Toggenburg, on December 8, 1735, the abbot officials Johann Baptist Keller and Niklaus Rüdlinger, who had previously led the opposition to the abbey, murdered. On January 9, 1739, the French-sponsored conference in Frauenfeld on the six arbitration sites ended with no result. Merchants and tradespeople were summoned by the abbot to a conference in Rorschach on March 11, 1739, to discuss trade issues and to discuss the introduction of trade and industry regulations, which were adopted and sworn on April 8 of the same year. Through careful administration and thrift, the abbot reduced the debt burden. On September 21, 1739, von Rudolphi expelled the Constance official Franz Andreas Rettich, who wanted to visit the St. Gallen parishes on behalf of the bishop, from the abbot's territory, which led to a renewed dispute with the diocese of Constance about the spiritual jurisdiction and visitation rights.
