Joseph von Weber

Joseph von Weber (born September 23, 1753 in Rain , † February 14, 1831 in Augsburg ) was a German scientist and Catholic clergyman .

Weber spent part of his youth in Bingen , where his uncle worked as a pastor. In 1764 he moved to the grammar school in the Benedictine monastery of Heilig Kreuz in Donauwörth , where he became a student of Beda Mayr . From 1770 to 1772 he studied at the Jesuit College in Augsburg , moved to the University of Dillingen from 1773 to 1777 and was ordained a priest in 1776 . In the following years he acquired doctoral degrees in theology and philosophy . First he worked in Dillingen , later in Ingolstadt and Landshut as a professor of physics and chemistry . He was also active as an author of scientific works. In 1778 he published a work on an air electrophor that he had invented .

In 1811 Joseph Weber became pastor in Wittislingen , in 1817 dean. From 1821 he held various leading offices in the diocese of Augsburg . He was cathedral capitular , vicar general and cathedral dean and was raised to the personal nobility in 1826 by being awarded the Knight's Cross from the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown . Weber also wore the Bavarian Order of Ludwig and was an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1821 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In the Great Cathedral in Augsburg , a memorial stone at the Domdekan and vicar general recalls. In his hometown Rain, Josef-Weber-Strasse has been named in his honor since 1946.
