Julian Pike (* 1958 ) is an English opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

Pike studied singing at the Royal College of Music in London and with Pierre Bernac in Paris . He became known when he sang José in La Tragédie de Carmen , a version of the opera by Georges Bizet arranged by Peter Brook , in Paris, Zurich , Stockholm , Copenhagen and New York from 1982–84 . Pike preferred contemporary music on stage as in the concert hall . He performed in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy and at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in Karlheinz Stockhausen's Thursday of Light . In 1985 he sang Jack in Kurt Weill's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny at the Wexford Festival and took part in a major tour of the European Youth Orchestra under Matthias Bamert . In 1988 he took part in the world premiere of another opera from Stockhausen's light cycle, Montag aus Licht , at La Scala in Milan , and repeated this creation in Amsterdam , Frankfurt am Main and Paris. In Frankfurt, at the festivals of Edinburgh and Montepulciano and the British radio BBC he sang the Lord Puff in Hans Werner Henze's The English Cat . In 1989 he appeared at the Music Theater Wales as Roderick in Philip Glass ' The Fall of the House of Usher , and in 1991 in Stockholm as Piet vom Fass in György Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre . In 1992 he took over the role of Michael at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon in another world premiere from Stockhausen's light cycle, Tuesday from Light ; this performance was repeated in Amsterdam.

His repertoire includes a number of other roles, from the baroque opera ( L'incoronazione di Poppea by Claudio Monteverdi , Pigmalion by Jean-Philippe Rameau , both at Kent Opera) to the works of Richard Strauss (dance master in Ariadne on Naxos ). This dichotomy can also be seen in his concert hall repertoire, on the one hand for old and baroque music , on the other hand for modern vocal works. Pike gave very successful concerts in London (Ligeti Festival 1989), at the Bath , Camden and Aldeburgh festivals , but also abroad. His tours have taken him to music centers in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, Finland and Austria. He was also a member of the song ensembles Songmaker's Almanac and Fortune's Fire Lute .

Pike has taught as Assistant Head since 1994 and as Head of Vocal and Operatic Studies at the Birmingham Conservatoire , one of the most renowned conservatories in England , since 1999 . In 2003 he was awarded the title of professor.

Julian Pike was born with the singer Caroline Pike . Friend married and father of actress Rosamund Pike .
