Julius Alhard Gelpke

Karl Julius Alhard Gelpke (* 28. September 1811 in Goslar (former Prussia , now Lower Saxony ); † 28. September 1885 in Gelterkinden ) was a German-born , Swiss doctor .

Life

Family and education

Julius Alhard Gelpke was the son of the doctor Heinrich Christian Ludwig Gelpke (1767–1829) and Friederike Lidia Philomena born. Wackerhagen (1784-1837). He attended high schools in Goslar and Wolfenbüttel . From 1830 to 1833 he studied medicine at the universities of Göttingen , Würzburg and Heidelberg . In 1833 he had to leave Germany. He fled to Switzerland, where he continued his studies at the University of Zurich . In 1834 he became a Doctor of Medicine doctorate .

In 1841 he married Karoline Streuli, the daughter of the doctor Heinrich Streuli von Meilen . They had ten children. Rudolf Hermann (* 1841), Wilhelmine Constantine Dorothea (* 1843), Bertha (* 1844), Julius (* 1845), Karl Otto (* 1847), Emma Sophie Caroline (* 1849), Julius Alhard (* 1850), Ludwig Hermann (* 1854), Hermann (* 1857) and Karl Theodor (* 1860).

medicine

Due to his political activities, he had to leave the canton of Zurich after completing his studies . He was able to practice as a doctor in the young canton of Baselland . In 1835 he received Swiss citizenship and the citizenship of Tecknau . In 1835 he opened a practice as a country doctor in Aesch . In 1836 he moved to Allschwil .

As a country doctor, he gained an excellent reputation, particularly in combating the cholera epidemic of 1855.

In the military he was a brigade doctor in 1848.

politics

Julius Alhard Gelpke took part in the uprising of the fraternity in Germany in 1833 . Since the planned enterprise failed, many of the insurgents had to flee Germany. Gelpke went to Zurich, Switzerland.

In February 1834 he took part in the Savoy campaign for the liberation of Sardinia . Because of this action, he was expelled from the canton of Zurich after completing his studies.

Gelpke sympathized with the secret society Young Germany, founded in Bern in 1834 .

In 1844 and 1845 he took part in the troop marches and in 1847 took part in the Sonderbund War .
