Ludwig Gelpke

Hermann Ludwig Gelpke (born July 28, 1854 in Allschwil ; † November 9, 1946 in Pratteln ; resident in Tecknau ) was a Swiss surgeon and publicist .

Life

Family and education

Ludwig was the son of Julius Alhard Gelpke , a country doctor, and Karoline nee Streuli.

After attending grammar school in Basel , Ludwig Gelpke studied medicine at the universities of Basel , Zurich and Geneva . In 1879 he passed the state examination in Basel and was awarded a doctorate in medicine in 1883 .

He received his surgical training at the University of Vienna with Theodor Billroth and Anton von Eiselsberg .

In 1886 he passed the state examination in surgery at the University of Freiburg in Freiburg im Breisgau . This was followed by further training in surgery until 1889 with Jules-Emile Péan in Paris .

Ludwig's first marriage was in 1885 with Anna Emilie Hägler von Füllinsdorf ; his second in 1911 with Frieda Bender from Zurich . His son Ludwig Alhard comes from his first marriage .

In 1880 Ludwig ran a country doctor's practice in Gelterkinden .

After completing his training in Paris, he set up a surgical practice in Mulhouse (Alsace) in 1889 and in Liestal in 1890 . Between 1894 and 1924 he was the chief physician of the canton hospital and the mental hospital in Liestal. From 1924 until his death in 1946, between the ages of 70 and 92, he again ran a practice as a country doctor in Pratteln, where he settled in 1927.

From 1906 he was a private lecturer at the University of Basel, which appointed him associate professor of surgery in 1921 .

Numerous scientific publications bear his name. Ludwig Gelpke was seen as a distinctive and versatile doctor personality. He made a name for himself as a champion of the hygienic way of life and was considered a fighter for peace.

In his military career he reached the rank of lieutenant colonel . During the First World War , he gained experience in war surgery in a military hospital in Silesia in 1915/16 .

Ludwig joined the student fraternity Corps Alamannia Basel in Basel , which had accepted him in 1877.
