Julius Rieckher (born July 7, 1819 in Stuttgart , † July 14, 1878 in Heilbronn ) was a German classical philologist and headmaster.

Life

Julius Rieckher completed the lower and middle classes of the grammar school in his native city of Stuttgart and in 1833 switched to the Protestant seminar in Blaubeuren . From 1837 to 1847 he studied theology and philology in Tübingen . Towards the end of his studies he won a competition; the prize assignment that was advertised related to Isaiah . After completing his studies, Rieckher was parish vicar in the Swabian Alb for six months and completed educational trips to Paris and Rome . He then became a repetiteur at the lower theological seminary in Maulbronn . He remained in this position for five years and mainly dealt with the Greek language. Together with Ephorus Wilhelm Bäumlein and Karl Holzer , Rieckher worked on a work on Greek repetition exercises, the Themata . He also worked on Gustav Eduard Benseler's Greek lexicon until the end of his life . For reasons of comparative linguistics, Rieckher also devoted himself to Sanskrit . A special hobby was also mathematics . In an obituary for Rieckher, a colleague stated "that he would have been able to teach an entire grammar school excellently in all subjects through all classes on his own ." Rieckher wrote his dissertation in 1852 on the Participium of the Greek Aorists. I-II.

In 1853 Rieckher became a professor at the Karlsgymnasium in Heilbronn .

In the spring of 1871, Rieckher was put in charge of this school and the Heilbronner Realanstalt. For many years Rieckher was involved in the central examinations of the state and a member of the commission for preceptor and professorial examinations . As a teacher, according to the necrology, he was extremely enthusiastic and also very popular with the better students, but often attacked the "lazy and distracted" and was generally a representative of the categorical imperative . He behaved humanely towards the teaching staff and demonstrated a “truly noble disposition”, at least as long as he perceived “loyalty and conscientiousness in office” among the teachers.

Gustav von Schmoller wrote in his memories of his youth , the lessons with Rieckher and Wilhelm Bernhard Mönnich, who had been the headmaster of the Heilbronn grammar school since 1854 , that he did not have to describe his grammar school as a lost one.

Rieckher owes the first printed complete German translation of the metaphysics of Aristotle . It was published in Stuttgart in 1860.
