Gottlieb Julius Wentscher (also: Julius Wentcher ; born August 13, 1881 in Königsberg (Prussia) , † 1961 ) was a German-Australian painter.

Life

Julius Wentscher was born in Königsberg in 1881 as the son of the landscape painter Julius Wentscher of the same name . In 1899 he graduated from the Joachimsthal School in Berlin. He received his artistic training from his father and at the Académie Julian in Paris.

In 1914 he married the sculptor Tina Haim (1887–1974). After serving in the First World War, he returned to Berlin and was listed in the address books as a painter from 1918. From 1921 they undertook joint study trips to Greece, Italy, Egypt and in 1931/32 a longer trip to Bali and Java . In 1933, on the advice of Käthe Kollwitz , with whom Tina Haim was friends , they decided not to return to Germany because of the worsening situation for Jews. This was followed by stays in China (1932/33) and again in Indonesia (1933/34) as well as in the countries of Indochina , around 1935/36 in Siam and Cambodia , 1936/37 in Singapore and 1936/40 in Malaysia .

When the Second World War broke out , the couple were deported to Australia as Enemy Alien in 1940, where they were initially interned in Tatura, Victoria , until 1942 . After their release, they settled in Melbourne, were granted Australian citizenship in 1946 and Anglicised their name to "Wentcher". Julius Wentcher died in 1961. His works were predominantly landscapes, the representation of horses and portraits, from the time in the Far East also in the style of the local culture.

Together with his wife, Julius Wentscher designed the artistic furnishings for the Malaysian pavilion in Glasgow in 1938 in the form of ten dioramas with life-size artificial stone figures in front of landscapes.
