The 1980 Junior World Chess Championship was a junior chess world championship and was held in Dortmund from August 17 to 31, 1980 .

The 17-year-old Garry Kasparov won the world championship, 1.5 points ahead of the only 15-year-old Nigel Short - his future opponent in the 1993 World Chess Championship . The best German was Klaus Bischoff (shared 3rd to 5th place).
The Junior World Championship in Dortmund was a world championship for male youth under 20 years of age. The organizers were the German Chess Federation and the Dortmund Chess Friends.
This championship was held for the 10th anniversary of the German Chess Youth (DSJ). The event took one and a half years to organize and managed with around 80,000 DM. The world championship was made possible by the support of the city of Dortmund and the German Chess Federation supported the then President Alfred Kinzel . In the DSJ itself, Lutz Ebbinghaus was primarily responsible for the organization.
