The Creeping juniper ( Juniperus procumbens ) is a plant from the family of the cypress family (Cupressaceae). It is native to the islands of southern Japan .

description

The creeping juniper grows as an evergreen , prostrate shrub that can reach heights of up to 70 centimeters. The creeping, elongated branches are bent upwards at their ends.

The 6 to 8 millimeters long, stiff leaves are needle-shaped and stand together in three whorls . They are slightly curved, have two white stomatal bands on the upper side of the leaf and are furrowed on the lower side. The base of the leaf is sloping and the tip is pointed.

The appearance of the male cones is unknown. The cones are shaped approximately spherical with a diameter 8-9 millimeters. As they mature, they are colored black and have blue-green frosting. Each cone bears two to three seeds. The toothed seeds are about 4 millimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 44.

Occurrence

The natural range of the creeping juniper lies in Japan on Kyushu and the Bonin Islands . It occurs wild in the Chinese provinces of Anhui , Fujian , Jiangsu , Jiangxi , Liaoning , Shandong , Yunnan and Zhejiang .

Systematics

It was first described as Juniperus chinensis var. Procumbens in 1847 by Philipp Franz von Siebold in Synopsis Coniferarum. P. 21. In 1870 the Siebold variety was raised to the rank of an independent species in Flora Japonica 2. p. 59 as Juniperus procumbens . Synonyms for Juniperus procumbens (Siebold ex Endl.) Miq. are Sabina procumbens (Siebold ex Endl.) Iwata & Kusaka and Sabina chinensis var. procumbens (Siebold ex Endl.) Antoine .

Danger

The creeping juniper is classified as “not endangered” in the IUCN Red List . However, it is pointed out that a new check of the hazard is necessary.
