The Steyr branch of the Garsten prison is a judicial prison in the statutory city of Steyr in Upper Austria (Berggasse 6). It is attached to the Steyr Regional Court as a judicial prison . The prison is the smallest prison in Austria and the accommodation is of Freigängern and occupants in the relaxed enforcement . Until April 2010 it was its own independent prison.

history

The construction of the former monastery complex, in which the prison is located today, is dated to 1646. The monastery was originally built for the Cölestine Order. It fell victim to the great fire of 1727. After the reconstruction of the destroyed facilities, the monastery was continued for a few years by an Ursuline order . It was canceled under the reformer Emperor Josef II , whereupon the city took over the building in 1786 and converted it into a theater. The first penal institution was set up in the remaining parts of the building. This was handed over to state administration in 1857 and organizationally attached to the Steyr District Court. Since that year the Steyr Prison existed as the smallest independent prison in Austria and at the same time as the only prison that was not owned by the judicial administration or the federal real estate company, but owned by the city.

On August 30, 2007, there were exactly 59 prisoners in a total of 63 planned detention places. This corresponded to a total utilization of 93.65%. These places of detention were intended for the execution of pre- trial detention as well as criminal detention up to a total length of 18 months. Administrative prisoners could also be accommodated in the building. It was intended for male adults and adolescents.

Due to the small size of the institution as well as the location in the middle of the inner city of Steyr, the meaningfulness of the existence of an own prison was questioned again and again. As early as 1997 there were plans on the part of the Federal Ministry of Justice to relocate them to the area of the Garsten Prison . However, this was initially dropped after greater resistance and repeated testing. Since April 13, 2010, the Steyr prison has been a branch of Garsten for good. The number of detention places remained the same. Detainees on remand have since been housed in Garsten and in Steyr prisoners and inmates in a relaxed prison. Currently, the prison is no longer used as a branch of the Garsten prison, prisoners are only housed in the neighboring police detention center. The Ministry of Justice has already announced that it intends to terminate the lease for the building in the foreseeable future.
