Justus Bockemühl (born September 15, 1930 in Solingen ; † September 7, 1983 in Düsseldorf ) was a German lawyer, local researcher and author on the early history of the Duchy of Berg .

Life

Bockemühl was born in Solingen as the son of the Protestant Reformed pastor Peter Bockemühl , who as a member of the Confessing Church came into conflict with the National Socialist rulers and became superintendent of the Wuppertal-Elberfeld church district in 1949. He spent his childhood and youth in nearby Wuppertal-Cronenberg .

After the British military government mediated abroad school year at the English Dover College in 1948 he made in 1950 on modern languages school at the Aue in Wuppertal - Elberfeld his high school .

When choosing to study history or law , he decided on law, as he could serve both interests with legal history . In 1958 he received his doctorate from the University of Cologne with the dissertation " The surrogation formulas of the civil law book " for Dr. jur. After his second state examination , also passed in 1958 , he worked as a notary in Wermelskirchen from 1965 , after which he was a notary in Wuppertal- Barmen from 1976 until his death .

During his studies he dealt with local history topics. He initially dealt with the local and church history of Cronenberg and, through his methodical work and the development of new sources, opened up new knowledge that received attention in numerous publications and lectures. His law studies helped him considerably, because a large part of the surviving medieval documents dealt with contracts , processes , arbitration decisions, administrative acts and other legal transactions , some of which can only be fully understood by a lawyer with knowledge of the medieval legal system.

His research and publications also dealt with the field of legal history, in particular the history of notarial services. Publications appeared in the Deutsche Notar-Zeitschrift and in the Festschrift of the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court.

In addition to his professional activity, he was also on the board of the Altenberger Dom -verein, on the main board of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein and as chairman of the Wermelskirchen department of the Bergisches Geschichtsverein. He was married to Dietlinde Bockemühl, née von der Ohe.

In 1978 he was awarded the Rhineland Valley as Rhenish cultural maintenance for his years of efforts in the scientific research of the Bergisch history .

His extensive legacy on historical research is in the Solingen city archive and in the archive of the BGV Wermelskirchen.
