occupation

King of the Last Days is a German two-part TV series from 1993 and takes place during the time of the Anabaptist Empire in Münster .

action

Sebastian Kien is a vagabond and buffoon who uses cunning to save the life of a young woman, Engele Kerkerinck, who was sentenced to death by hanging. Since her entire family had previously been hanged, she initially stayed with Sebastian, who gave her new courage to live. Engele, however, wants to go to Münster, where Jan van Leyden preaches, a former brothel owner and friend of Sebastian's in the film. He has become a leader of the Anabaptist movement, which has found many followers among both Catholic and Protestant populations, especially women. A power struggle ensues between the church, the nobility and the citizens, which ends in a long siege of the city of Münster by the prince-bishop's sovereign.

Most of the action takes place in the Münster of 1534, but apart from the names of a few main characters, it has little in common with the actual events in the Anabaptist Empire of Münster.

Production and publication

The film was partly shot in the Czech Republic. The Münster Principal Market was partially recreated in the studio. The film was first broadcast on November 17, 1993 by ZDF .

criticism

The very free handling of the historical material earned the director severe criticism for the treatment of this important chapter in the history of the German Reformation. Toelle wanted to depict religious madness and the decay of a city based on it in the early modern times and the ability of seducers to influence people.

The lexicon of international films found that the production was “staged with great effort in terms of decor and costumes. The drama focuses less on historical truth than on the seducibility of the masses for political purposes. "
