Künstlerhaus Bregenz in the Palais Thurn und Taxis

The Künstlerhaus Bregenz , originally Villa Gülich , then Palais Thurn und Taxis , is an international center for contemporary art in the Stadtpalais der Thurn und Taxis in the provincial capital Bregenz in Austria . It has existed since 1984.

description

After the renovation and conversion of the listed Palais Thurn und Taxis in 1983/84 by the architects Hans Purin and Heinz Wagner , the building was used for exhibitions by the professional association of visual artists in Vorarlberg as an international center for contemporary art. The professional association has been using the Gärtnerhaus annex since 1985 as a secretariat, library and archive.

The garden is one of the most important garden monuments in Austria. It was laid out by Gustav Prinz von und zu Thurn und Taxis after the area was expanded in 1887 and is a botanical garden with exotic trees ( arboretum ) on a good 6700 m². It was placed under monument protection as early as 1929 and is now listed in the appendix to Section 1, Paragraph 12 of the DMSG (No. 43).

The garden artist of Prince Thurn & Taxis, the Bohemian Wenzel Smetana, received an award in Vienna in 1901 for his landscape gardening and botanical work. The picturesque arrangement of the trees that form some refined rooms related to the rear of the castle, and also the artfully guided paths that structure the architectural framework of the park, are Smetana's masterpiece, which by and large has been preserved to the present day.

architecture

The Palais Thurn und Taxis was built in 1848 and was originally called Villa Gülich .

The recessed two-storey main building with a hipped roof encloses a small park in the style of a courtyard with side outbuildings.
