Kaarlo Edvin Mäkinen (born May 14, 1892 in Mariehamn , † May 11, 1980 in Turku ) was a Finnish wrestler and Olympic champion .

Career

Kaarlo Mäkinen started wrestling as a teenager. He belonged to the sports clubs Turun Riento Turku and Turun Voimamiehet Turku . He wrestled in both Greco-Roman and free styles, and was successful in both styles.

In 1918 he won his first medal at the Finnish championship with a 3rd place in the Greco-Roman style featherweight . He was Finnish champion four times, twice in the Greco-Roman style and twice in the free style.

In 1920 he started at the Olympic Games in Antwerp in free style in featherweight. He lost there to Samuel Gerson from the United States, with which he was eliminated and only finished 9th.

In 1921 Kaarlo Mäkinen was vice world champion in the Greco-Roman style in bantamweight in Helsinki . The decisive factor was his defeat against his compatriot Väinö Ikonen . At the World Championships in Stockholm in 1922 , he defeated bantamweight in Greco-Roman style a. a. Armand Magyar from Hungary , but lost to Eduard Pütsep from Estonia and Fritjof Svensson from Sweden , which brought him to 3rd place.

At the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris, he won the bantamweight free style behind his compatriot Kustaa Pihlajamäki and ahead of the American Bryan Hines, the silver medal . At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 , he achieved great success in free style in bantamweight, he won the gold medal . On the way to this success he defeated H. Sansum from Great Britain, Edmond Spapen from Belgium and Robert Hewitt from the United States.

Kaarlo Mäkinen was not at the start at the European Championships that have been taking place regularly since 1925.
