Schabtai Genrichowitsch Kalmanowitsch

Shabtai Kalmanovich ( Heb. שבתאי קלמנוביץ; lit. Šabtajus Kalmanovičius; Russian Шабтай Генрихович Калманович * 18th December 1947 in Kaunas , Lithuanian SSR , † 2 November 2009 in Moscow , Russia ) was a Russian entrepreneur , sports patron, CEO of Women -Basketball teams from Spartak Moscow .

Life

Kalmanowitsch was born in 1947 into a destitute Jewish family. His mother was a Holocaust survivor who found shelter with a Lithuanian family after she was released from Nazi captivity in the IX. Had fled away. He studied at the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute , joined the Soviet Army after graduating and emigrated to Israel with his family in 1971. Here he became a member of the Labor Party , graduated from the University of Jerusalem with a degree in engineering and became a producer and entrepreneur. He organized a concert tour of Galina and Valery Panov . At the invitation of Kalmanowitsch, Boney M , Baccara , Michael Jackson , Tom Jones , Liza Minnelli and Jose Carreras u. a. to Israel.

In Israel, Kalmanowitsch worked as a government advisor on the integration of Jews from the Soviet Union .

In 1988 he was sentenced to seven years in prison for industrial espionage for the Soviet secret service KGB and released after five years. The espionage dealt with the latest information in the field of biotechnology and military electronic control systems, which Soviet industry desperately needed. He said he was betrayed by one of his colleagues, a Soviet spy who asked Israel for political asylum. He later recalled spending several years all alone and in complete darkness before he began to go mad. Since then, he has only been able to fall asleep after taking sleeping pills.

After his release in 1993, he returned to Russia. Between 1993 and 1994, Kalmanowitsch and Iossif Dawydowitsch Kobson started several companies under the name "Liat-Natali". He later helped rebuild a market on Tishinskaya ploshchad in Moscow. Kalmanowitsch was one of the most colorful entrepreneurial figures of the New Russian founding period. He maintained contacts with "Japontschik", the underworld godfather Vyacheslav Ivankov , and the mafia boss of the Solnzewo brotherhood, Sergei Anatoljewitsch Michailow .

Kalmanovich was also active in philanthropy , donating large sums to renovate the Kaunas synagogue .

On November 2, 2009, he was shot dead by strangers in his car.

Private

Kalmanovich was married three times; most recently in 2005 with the basketball player Anna Archipowa .
