Kaltes Blut - Julia Durant determined is a German television film by Nicolai Rohde from 2019 . This is the second film of the crime film series Julia Durant determined , in turn, on the Julia Durant - series of crime novels of the writer Andreas Franz based.

The film is about the chief detective Julia Durant and her team, consisting of the detective inspectors Markus Schulz and Felix Dombrowski as well as forensic doctor Elif Kaymaz, who lead investigations in the village of Ortkriftl, near Frankfurt am Main.

In the rather conservative village, the two students Kerstin Grumack and Selina Kautz disappear one after the other. Both are 16 years old, have problems with their parents and are therefore in therapy at the Herzland riding center . During the investigation it turns out that Selina Kautz is having an affair with her married riding instructor Sonja Kaufmann. Kerstin Grumack also has a secret relationship; she is in a relationship with a much older, also married man. A short time later, Kautz's body is found in a nearby lake.

The screenplay by Andreas Bareiss, Kai-Uwe Hasenheit and Christian Pasquariello is based on the detective novel Kaltes Blut by the German writer Andreas Franz. The novel is the sixth volume in the Julia Durant series and was first published in 2003 by Knaur .

The shooting, directed by Nicolai Rohde , together with the shooting of the third film Murderous Days, took place from May 28 to July 25, 2019, mainly in Frankfurt am Main and the surrounding area. While Anja Niehaus was responsible for the costume, Holger Sebastian Müller was responsible for the production design. Andrea Hasenstab was in charge of the mask, Henner Visiting acted as cameraman, Thomas Stange was responsible for the editing and Thomas Klemm for the music.

Markus Schu wrote in the Weser-Kurier that the film offers crime thriller entertainment at a high level. He criticizes the fact that too many topics such as kidnappings, murders, affairs and pedophilia are built into the story for a 90-minute feature film. "Because you can hardly help the impression that the crime drama meanders narrative too much ." A clear focus would have done the story good, says Schu. In formal terms, however, the film stands out from the "audiovisually rather conservative television mash". The narrative weaknesses are compensated for by skillful background music, perfect cuts, pointed slow motion and excellent image design. The film is very good, especially from an aesthetic point of view. At the end, Schuh adds that much can still be expected from the "Julia Durant" series.

Tilmann P. Gangloff is of the opinion that the second film in the series is no longer a thriller, but rather a thriller that is well worth seeing. Contrary to Schu, Gangloff wrote that the implementation was more in line with the practices of the average television crime film. However, the story is unusual. Furthermore, the work with the actors is very good; the ensemble of the villagers is very well cast.

Audience rating

The free TV broadcast on Sat.1 on October 14, 2019 reached 1.40 million viewers, corresponding to a market share of 4.7 percent. 0.56 million viewers came from the advertising-relevant target group of 14 to 49 year olds. This corresponded to a 6.5 percent market share.
