Kanigowo [ kaɲigɔvɔ ] ( German Kandien even Candia ) is a village in the municipality Nidzica ( Nidzica ) in nidzica county ( Neidenburger circle ) in the Polish Warmia and Mazury .
Geographical location
The village is located in the historical region of East Prussia , five kilometers south of the city of Neidenburg ( Nidzica ) and 52 kilometers south of Allenstein ( Olsztyn ).
history
The first written mention of the place was in 1371 as Canegaw, in 1496 as Candien. The meaning of the Prussian name is unclear, but it should refer to vermin such as moths, mites and other vicious creatures. Kandien was the center of a parish as early as the 15th century . In 1785 Candien is referred to as a Cologne village with a church and 21 hearths (households); which belongs to the district and domain office district Neidenburg.
Due to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty , the population in the Allenstein voting area , to which Kandien belonged, voted on July 11, 1920 on whether they would continue to belong to East Prussia (and thus to Germany) or join Poland. In Kandien, 213 residents voted to remain with East Prussia, while Poland did not vote.
On October 1, 1935, Kandien was partially incorporated into the village of Olschau , which was renamed Struben on July 16, 1938 .
In 1945 Kandien belonged to the district Neidenburg in Administrative district Königsberg the province of East Prussia of the German Reich .
Towards the end of World War II , Kandien was occupied by the Red Army in January 1945 . In the summer of 1945 Kandien and the southern half of East Prussia were placed under Polish administration by the Soviet occupying power . In the following period the German villagers were expelled from Kandien by the local Polish administrative authorities .
Parish
Kandien was a Protestant parish until 1945. This also included the places: Heidemühle, Gniadtken, Kamiontken, Pawlicken, Sablotschken, Sagsau, Saffronken, Schimiontken, Willuhnen. Kandien had its own clergy until 1809 and was then merged with the parish of Neidenburg. In the 18th century the church also preached in Polish .
