Karin Schaub (born Karin Ruperti; born September 16, 1928 in Hawkesbury , Canada ) is a Swiss painter , draftsman and graphic artist .

Career

Karin Schaub is the daughter of the chemist Andreas Ruperti and Madeleine Marie Elisabeth van Rijckevorsel (stage name Madja Ruperti). Her family with French-Dutch roots emigrated to Canada as a result of the Russian Revolution . Her family moved to Basel in 1928 and became Swiss citizens in 1935.

Schaub attended schools in Basel from 1935 until his Matura and in 1949/1950 the graphics class at the Basel School of Applied Arts. In 1963 she began her work as an artist while studying philosophy , psychology and ethnology and dealt with surrealism and fantastic realism . From 1959 to 1968 she studied philosophy at the University of Basel, which she holds as Dr. phil. I graduated with a dissertation on Albert Camus and Death .

Schaub became known in the late 1970s for oversized vegetable still lifes and thus made an appearance at the international art fair ART Basel in 1977 . Such subjects and their flat, oversized design reveal Schaub's proximity to Pop Art .

After a heart attack in 1987, she stylistically dissolved all representationalism. The art critic Annelise Zwez wrote on the occasion of an exhibition in Basel in 1991, when Schaub had already made a name for himself with painting and collages:

“She no longer paints, but throws the paint onto the canvas. (...) In 1990 Karin Schaub was in a real creative frenzy. Never before have so many pictures been taken in a single year. And neither is like the other. Where there is no structure in the direction, it is often the color; In 1990 the Christmas exhibition in the Kunsthalle Basel featured the 145 × 175 centimeter picture entitled Ideal City Map . (…) Nothing is tangible in the sea of colors, but the white, the bluish, the pink, the warm green-yellow, the not very linear black in the underground are so cleverly 'planned' that the expressive gestures result in an urban growth structure the aircraft perspective. "

Schaub also continued to exhibit regularly in Basel, Switzerland and internationally with renowned artists and still had a solo exhibition in 2012 at Stapflehus in Weil am Rhein.

Works in collections and in urban space

After Schaub won 1st prize in the Basel Art Credit Competition in 1985, she was able to create two large murals in the entrance area of the Institute for Plant Physiology at the University of Basel . She designed two landscape views as a painting over the entire surface of the large wall niches. Works by Schaub can be found in the collections of the cantons of Basel-Stadt (9 works in the possession of the Kunstkredit), Basel-Landschaft and Aargau .
