Karkamış ( Kurdish گرگامێش Girgamêş ) is a city and also the name of a district in the Turkish province of Gaziantep in southeastern Anatolia . The city of Karkamış has 3,034 and the district 10,587 inhabitants (as of 2012). Karkamış is located in the southeast of the province and borders the Şanlıurfa Province and Syria . Here is a border crossing to the Syrian city of Jarabulus . The city of Karkamış is located on the Euphrates River .
The city is named after the ancient city of Karkemiš .
