Karel Absolon (born June 16, 1877 in Boskovice , Austria-Hungary , † October 6, 1960 in Brno ) was a Czechoslovak prehistorian , geologist and speleologist .

Life

Karel Absolon is the grandson of the naturalist Jindřich Wankel and the son of the doctor Vilibald Absolon. His mother Valeria Absolon , b. Minkusziewiczová , with whom his father was married for the second time, was engaged in paleontological art. In Brno he attended the humanistic grammar school. In Prague he studied zoology and geography.

During his studies at the Charles University he dealt with speleological research in the area of ​​the Moravian Karst . In 1907 he completed his habilitation in physical geography and a year later he managed the zoological collections of the Moravian Museum in Brno . In 1926 he was appointed associate professor , in 1927 full professor of palaeoanthropology and zoogeography at Charles University in Prague. Jan Jelínek was one of his students .

He conducted his research in zoology, speleology, karst research , geomorphology , paleontology and archeology . Even after his studies, his focus was on the Moravian Karst region. This area was systematically examined and mapped by him. He investigated and made the stepmother's gorge accessible to the population, researched in the Pekárna , Punkevní jeskyně and Kateřinská jeskyně caves . Together with Bohuslav Klíma , he carried out research in areas of Přerov , where the first prehistoric people settled in Moravia , as well as in Dolní Věstonice , Otaslavice and Ondratice . His finds were housed in the Mikulov Castle, where they were destroyed in a fire.

Absolon also explored karst areas in England , France and the Balkans . In total, he examined over 2000 caves. His oeuvre includes hundreds of articles in scientific journals and monographs.

The writer Václav Erben immortalized him in one of his “Captain Exner” novels as Professor Aboldon.
